Mrs. Cormier

Name: Rose Mary Cormier
Subject:  Algebra I
Email Address:  rose.cormier@jdpsbk12.org
Years of Teaching: 9 years

What I want you to know about me:

My preferred method of parent/teacher communication is e-mail.  If possible, please send me an e-mail stating you are the “parent of name of student”.

The state has mandated the Comprehensive Curriculum that is presented by units.  The units do not follow the order of the textbook (i.e. Unit 1 is covered in Chapters 2, 8, & 11).  Textbooks are issued to students and are to be used as a supplement to the Comprehensive Curriculum Activities.  Students will leave the textbook at home.  Textbooks will be provided at school when needed for class activities.

To view the new curriculum, visit www.louisianaschools.net.  Click the Curriculum tab.  Under Instructional Resources for Mathematics, choose Comprehensive Curriculum.  This site also offers many other interesting items, including links to release GEE items and PASS (on-line practice tests).  The student password is: tiger.

The student handbook will be read to students during the first three days of school.  Please be aware that policies for dress code, electronic devices, and cheating will be strictly enforced.

My planning period is from 2:21-3:12 p.m.  Parents or guardians wishing to discuss a student’s progress or tests can call for a phone conference or make an appointment to meet in person.  Read page 5 in handbook for specific dates of progress reports and report cards.

Daily Personal Supplies—Students are to have a binder with loose-leaf paper, tab dividers and 2 pencils with erasers in class daily.  Students will receive a discipline note for “all materials not brought to class” if they do not bring these materials to class daily.  If you have already purchased notebooks, the student will need a small binder to keep track of a GEE prep workbook, and Comprehensive Curriculum Activity Handouts.

Classroom Supplies--Students are asked to pay a $2 supply fee by Friday September 8.

In an effort to cut down on each student’s school supply expenses, each student is asked to bring a $2 supply fee instead of supplies.  Mrs. Cormier will then supply one classroom set of compasses, scissors, colored pencils, colored paper, glue, tape, folders, calculators, and any other supplies necessary for projects for the year.

Calculators—Students will be allowed to use calculators on some tests and not on others in order to prepare them for the GEE tests (30 problems with calculator & 30 problems without a calculator).  A classroom set of TI 30XII calculators will be available for use at school.  It is strongly suggested that students have some type of scientific calculator for use at home.

During instruction in my classes, I use visuals, manipulatives, hands-on activities, and other techniques designed to help students understand the mathematical concepts.  I have experience in assisting students with disabilities, ADD, and other issues.  I am available to assist students before school on Tuesday and/or Friday OR after school on Wednesday.

Instruction—Lesson Plans will be posted on a weekly basis on the school web-site under Class News & Info (www.jenningshighschool.org).  These plans include all assignments and test dates.  Students will have at least four tests each six-weeks.  If five or more tests are given, the lowest test grade of the six-weeks may be dropped.  If a student does poorly on a regular test, the student may make an appointment to take a re-test (same material, but different test).  Re-testing is not allowed on midterm or final exams.  Daily Assignments are designed to help students learn the math concepts.  Assignments will be checked for completeness (did the student make an honest attempt to work each problem).  Assignments will not count against a student’s grade.
